“Brutishly Broken Before Becoming a Bauble”
Windshields act as barriers between people and the outside world, between people and each other. These panes serve as translucent protectors, shields against the onrushing elements. When these barriers are shattered—the presumed safety afforded behind the glass is disabled—the meaning becomes fractured. The broken glass experiences the death of its worth. Through strategic entrapment of this urban detritus, the remnants of a society destroyed can be recast as precious, as worthy. This inversion of meaning—the protection of a broken protector— breathes freshness and vibrancy into the exhumed material.
~ Below are some creative process photos of “Brutishly Broken Before Becoming a Bauble”. This two-part necklace is worn as a low-resting collar piece, when connected at the shoulders to its sister piece, they become a swooping, elegant, and wearable site-specific installation for the body. ~
- I started by cutting out isometric ellipses, then taped them to my neck to work out the necklace layout.
